All of the features of the History Tour plus more! Here we explore the wider city and uncover some hidden gems. Learn about the ‘King in the North’ - the legendary St. Oswald - who returned from exile to reclaim his father's Northumbrian lands and establish a legacy that paved the way for Cuthbert and the Durham story. We also take a look at the dark side of Durham as we explore the prisons, executions and hauntings that add to the mystery and intrigue of the city. Finally, a tour of Durham would not be complete without delving into its rich coal mining heritage and the local people who are at the heart of the Durham story.
Highlights
Key Info
-
The walk will take approximately 2.5 hours and will encounter some steep, descending steps and will include some short, steep inclines. We will stop regularly on route.
-
Unfortunately, the route is not wheelchair accessible. We will encounter one small descending set of stairs to the riverside and some sloping, uneven terrain around the route. Please contact us if you would like to discuss creating a tailored route that will make the tour more accessible for you. We promise we will not compromise on content.
-
Dogs are encouraged! Please be mindful that the main streets are likely to be busy during the tour.
-
The tour will go ahead in all weather. Please be prepared for changeable North East conditions.
-
If we cancel the tour in the case of extreme weather, we will offer a full refund.
-
During winter months, the tour will take place after sunset. This will give us some beautiful and atmospheric views. We will provide flashlights for navigation along the dark riverside concrete path.
-
The maximum number of people permitted on this tour is 20. This is to ensure that quality is maximised and we do not cause congestion on Durham’s streets.
-
If you wish to discuss group bookings, please contact us and we can discuss your requirements.
-
Please note that we will not enter any buildings during the tour. We aim to provide a tour of the main highlights in the city so that you can then explore them internally in your own time.
-
Cancellations must be made no later than 24 hours before the tour is due to start. If you cancel after this time, a refund cannot be given.
